How do I make sushi rice with a rice cooker?

Sushi uses its own special rice to give it its unique flavor. Like most types of rice, it has very specific measurements and special instructions in order to give it the flavor that you want, so that you can create great tasting sushi and have the perfect rice to go with them.

One of the best things about rice cookers these days is that many have sushi rice settings to help make the process easier. Many of the fuzzy logic and advanced rice cooker systems are equipped with their own sushi rice settings, so that you can easily get the quality rice that you want, ready to eat.

Making Sushi Rice

After you have purchased a brand of sushi rice that you enjoy, your first step will be to wash the rice considerably. In fact, it is advised that you wash the rice until the water you use it has become completely clear, implying that you have removed all residue from the sides.

Rinsing the rice is simple:

·        Fill a bowl with water.

·        Put the rice inside the bowl.

·        Move the rice around with your hands.

·        Pour out the water

·        Repeat until the water is clear after washing.

Once you have rinsed the rice, then you place it inside of your rice cooker and add one cup of water for every one cup of rice. Press the start button and let it run. If your rice cooker has the sushi rice setting, it is a good idea to choose that setting for improved flavor.

After the rice has finished cooking inside the machine, you will not want to open the top right away. Instead, you want to let the right sit for about 10 to 15 minutes to allow the rice to steam itself. Only after it has steamed for a while should you open the lid of the rice cooker and fluff the rice. As soon as you are done you can add the seasoning to the rice, and then use it to make your sushi.

Sushi Rice Seasoning

There are different methods for seasoning your rice. All of them must be done in a separate bowl and added to the rice later. Seasoning sushi rice requires rice wine vinegar, and often salt and sugar. Mix these ingredients separately, and throw them into the pot after it has completed steaming. One popular recipe is:

·        5 Teaspoons Rice Wine Vinegar

·        1 ½ Teaspoons Sugar

·        ½ Teaspoon Salt

Mix these ingredients together before adding them to the rice. It is also strongly advised that you mix gently, because should you crush the rice it will not taste as delicious once it is made into sushi.
