What is an on / off rice cooker?

Every day, more technologically advanced appliances are being released that make cooking an easier process. Rice cookers are no exception. There are rice cookers today that have their own form of artificial intelligence, ensuring that you get perfect rice every time through a variety of heating/sensing systems.

However, these improvements in technology come with a considerable price. The cost of some of the more expensive rice cookers with all the features can be as much as $200 or more – a large investment if you cook rice infrequently, or you have the time to spend to simply use a pot.

For those people that do not need such a fancy gadget in order to cook some basic rice, there are several inexpensive rice cookers known as “On/Off rice cookers.”

On/Off – Back to the Basics

On and Off rice cookers are designed to simply cook your rice as best as they can, saving you time and trouble. With some priced as little as $20, these appliances are generally easy to use and easy to understand. Simply place the rice into the pot. Add the water you need. Press “Start” and wait. After a while, your rice will be done, and the device will shut off.

Despite their simplicity, these rice cookers still use the most important features – that is, the ability for the device to shut off automatically when the rice is “done” so that the grains are not overcooked and your rice will taste great.

The only difference between these basic rice cookers and the more expensive ones is that these types are unable to adjust for things like measuring errors and external heat the way some of the more technologically advanced appliances are. They also usually only come with programming for certain types of rice, and the rest you need to do on your own.

For most people that are simply making some quick rice for their families or themselves, this type of rice cooker is more than enough to create the dishes you want.

Types of On/Off Cookers

In addition, there are different types of these rice cookers available, so that you can always splurge a little bit more and get ones with the features you want.

·        With “Stay Warm” Feature – One of the most important features available, rather than turn off your rice cooker once the rice is done, the appliance will stay on with a lower warmth setting in order to maintain decent heat throughout the rice. These varieties are only $40+, and will make sure that whenever you are ready to serve the rice, the rice is ready to be served.

·        Without “Stay Warm” Feature – When you just need rice to be ready, this type of rice cooker is more than enough. One the rice is done, the device turns off. These appliances cost as little as $25.

There are also several rice cooker varieties that have different variations of these styles, like the ones that will keep your rice warm all day (for those that need rice for more than one meal) and others that will stay warm for a while but need to you unplug the device when it is completed, otherwise it will continue to warm for days.

On/Off rice cookers do not contain many of the interesting technological features of some of the more advanced varieties, but when you simply want rice and do not care for all of the other gadgets that are available, they are beyond adequate and considerably less expensive. For most individuals, one of these styles will be enough to satisfy your needs.
